HARWICH, MA — A SWAT standoff in Harwich Tuesday involving a despondent man with a gun ended peacefully, police said. The incident happened at a residence on Long Pond Drive. The man, identified only as a 24-year-old, surrendered after the three-hour standoff and was hospitalized for a psychological evaluation.
Police said officers were called to the home at about 9:30 a.m. for a report of an armed individual and encountered the man holding a gun to his head. The Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council's SWAT team responded to the residence and negotiators started a dialogue with the man. At about 12:30 p.m., he surrendered.
Police said they sized a .38-caliber handgun and ammunition from a bedroom in the home.
