Cape Cod Woman Stole $187K Of Dead Husband's Benefits: Feds

Susan Condon, of Orleans, admitted to stealing $187,000 of her dead husband's Social Security benefits over 13 years.

ORLEANS, MA — A Cape Cod woman last week admitted to stealing $186,804 in Social Security benefits belonging to her dead husband over a 13-year period, prosecutors said. Susan Condon, 65, pleaded guilty to theft and making false statements during a hearing in federal court in Boston.

"Condon served as the representative payee for her husband in his receipt of Social Security benefits," U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling said in a statement. "Her husband passed away in April 2004, but she continued to receive his Social Security benefits each month. She did not inform the SSA that her husband had died more than 10 years earlier. From the time of her husband’s death in April 2004 through February 2017, Condon received approximately $186,804 in Social Security benefits."

Condon will be sentenced in May. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
