Hyannis Crash: Pedestrian Mistaken For Trash Bag, Driver Says

Barnstable police said Newman Galati was seriously hurt after he was struck by a car and dragged.

BARNSTABLE, MA — A pedestrian was seriously injured Sunday morning in Hyannis after police said he was struck by a car and dragged. The pedestrian, Newman Galati, 26, of Hyannis, suffered critical injuries and was medflighted to a Boston-area hospital. Police said he was expected to survive.

Police did not identify the driver and no charges were filed. The crash happened on Sea Street at about 3:40 a.m.

"The (driver) was traveling on Seabrook Rd. and approached the intersection of Sea St. when he observed what appeared to him to be a trash bag in the roadway," Barnstable police said in a statement. "The operator drove over the object and stated it felt like the vehicle had struck snow or ice. The operator pulled onto Sea St. where he noticed the vehicle was now driving awkwardly, and pulled into a side street to investigate. At that time the operator discovered he had struck Galati who was now under the vehicle. The operator backed the vehicle off of Galati and subsequently notified emergency responders sometime after his discovery."

The crash remained under investigation, police said.
