Local Man Dies in Single-Car Crash

Gary Ostrom of West Barnstable died in a car crash on Rte. 495 early this morning. A passenger was seriously injured.

A Barnstable man died in a single-car crash on Route 495 early this morning at 6:28 a.m. by exit 11, Mansfield, according to a press release from the Massachusetts State Police. The passenger was seriously injured. 

 Gary Ostrom,53, of West Barnstable, was driving a 2003 Ford pick-up truck northbound when the vehicle skidded off the road and rolled over into the median strip, ejecting both occupants, according to a preliminary investigation by the State Police.

Ostrom was transported to Sturdy Hospital by the Mansfield Fire Department and pronounced deceased a short time later, State Police said in a press release.

Route 495 was closed to accommodate a medical helicopter that transported the passenger, Joshua Ostrom, 19, of West Barnstable to Massachusetts General Hospital. 

At the time of the crash there was a parked, unoccupied State Police cruiser on the southbound side of Route 495 investigating another car crash that had been caused by icy road conditions at that same location.

State Police are still investigating the cause of the accident and the status of the passenger is not known at this time.
