Shot Cape Cod Police Dog's Stitches Removed
Yarmouth Police Officer Sean Gannon and his police dog Nero were shot searching for a career criminal. Gannon was killed; Nero survived.

YARMOUTH, MA — A Cape Cod police dog shot searching for a career criminal last month is continuing its "remarkable" recovery. Nero and its handler, Yarmouth Police Officer Sean Gannon, were shot April 12 in Barnstable. Gannon was killed. Nero was hit and the face and neck and survived multiple surgeries. The animal's stitches were recently removed as its long road to recovery continues.
Police said Thomas Latanowich, who has 125 criminal charges on his record, shot the pair. Latanowich was charged with murder and mistreating a police dog.
Thousands of law enforcement officers from across the country honored Gannon during his funeral. There have been several fundraisers for Gannon's family, with more in the coming days and weeks. On Friday, Cpae Cod Cumberland Farms stores are donating a portion of drink sales to a memorial fund for Gannon.
