Shot Yarmouth Police Dog Released From Hospital

Yarmouth police K-9 "Nero" was shot searching for a career criminal in Barnstable. His handler, Officer Sean Gannon, was killed.

YARMOUTH, MA — "Nero," the Yarmouth police dog shot searching for a career criminal in Barnstable last week, has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, according to police. The dog, which was shot in the head and neck, endured multiple surgeries, police said Wednesday. Nero's handler, Officer Sean Gannon, was killed in the shooting. Police said Thomas Latanowich, who has 125 criminal charges, shot Gannon and Nero as officers tried to arrest him for a probation violation. Latanowich eventually surrendered and was charged with murder and mistreating a police dog.

Nero was released from the hospital the same day as Gannon's funeral. Thousands of mourners, including law enforcement officers from across the country, attended the service at St. Pius X Church in Yarmouth. Gannon was 32 years old and left behind a wife.

"At the end of one of the most emotional and saddest days ... Nero was released from his hospital and was taken home," Yarmouth police said in a statement. "We thank all of those who helped rescue and save this innocent animal's life."

Nero was also Gannon's family dog and is expected to be returned to his family. Police thanked retired K-9 handler, Peter McLelland, who they said has been by Nero's side since the shooting.

"Rest In Peace Sean, your beloved K9 Nero is home," police added.
