Shot Yarmouth Police Dog's Recovery 'Uplifts' Mourning Officers
Yarmouth Police K-9 "Nero" was shot alongside its handler, Officer Sean Gannon, in Barnstable while serving a search warrant. Gannon died.

YARMOUTH, MA — It is a somber time for the Yarmouth Police Department following the shooting death of Officer Sean Gannon this month. There was an "uplifting" sight today, however, as Gannon's police dog — which was also shot — returned to the station. Gannon and "Nero" were shot by a career criminal in Barnstable as they tried to arrest him for a probation violation, police said. Nero was hit in the face and neck and endured multiple surgeries. The dog was released from a veterinary hospital last week on the same day as Gannon's funeral.
Police said Thomas Latanowich, who has 125 criminal charges on his record, shot the pair. Latanowich was charged with murder and mistreating a police dog.
Police said Nero has not fully recovered but is well on his way.
