Slain Cape Cod Cop Honored For Police Memorial
Police agencies across Massachusetts will honor slain Yarmouth police Officer Sean Gannon for Peace Officers Memorial Day.

YARMOUTH, MA — Police agencies across Massachusetts on Tuesday will honor fallen Yarmouth police Officer Sean Gannon and other law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty for Peace Officers Memorial Day. Flags across the state will be lowered to half-staff and some local police agencies will hold ceremonies.
Peace Officers Memorial Day was created by Congress in 1961 to honor fallen law enforcement officers. The day is part of National Police Week, marked by mourners who visit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., to remember the thousands of officers killed in the line of duty. The names of about 200 officers who died in the line of duty in 2017 will be read aloud.
This year's event comes during a somber time on Cape Cod. Last month, Gannon, 32, was shot and killed in Barnstable searching for a career criminal. His police dog, Nero, was also shot and survived. The accused murderer, Thomas Latanowich, surrendered. Gannon was part of a team of officers attempting to arrest him for a probation violation.
