Bedford Students to Compete in National Science Bowl Regionals

A team of Bedford High School students will compete in the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science National Science Bowl regional competition.

Bedford High School will be represented by a team of students atΒ the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science National Science Bowl regional competition at the University of Conneticut on March 9.Β 

The winning team from each regional competition will win a fully paid trip to Washington D.C. to participate in the National Science Bowl on April 25, according to a release from the Department of Energy.

The winner of the national competition will win prizes for the competing team members, as well as for their school, according to the release.

Michael Griffin, one of the BHS students headed to UConn to compete in the National Science Bowl regionals on Saturday, said his team is excited to be competing.Β

"The team is practicing for the competition and hopes to perform well in the competition," Griffin said.Β 

At the regional competition, the team of four from BHS, along with teams from 38 other schools from across New England, will be tested on subjects including mathematics, astronomy, biology, earth science and physics, according to a blog post by Office of Science senior writerΒ CharlesΒ Rousseaux.Β 

Now in its 23rd year, the National Science Bowl "was established to encourage students in the challenging but essential subjects ofΒ scienceΒ and mathematics; to excel and ultimately pursue careers in those fields," according to the blog post.Β 

This year, 9,500 high school students are expected to participate in the National Science Bowl, according to Rousseaux, "many of whom will likely go on to becomeΒ scientistsΒ and teachers, engineers and leaders."
