New Pope Francis Elected: Catholics in Bedford React

The white smoke appeared on Wednesday, signalling that the conclave had chosen Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to be the new head of the Catholic Church. Locals across the community responded.

White smoke rose from the Vatican on Wednesday, signalling the election ofΒ Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who has taken the name Francis, to the papacy.Β 

In Bedford, Pastor of Saint Michael Parish, Father Mark Sheehan, said he was "very happy with the choice of a Pope from this side of Italy."

Sheehan said it he also happy to learn Pope Francis l was from Latin America, an area with strong ties to the Catholic faith.Β 

"We're also very happy because Latin America is the strongest area of Catholics on this half of the globe," Sheehan said.Β

While Sheehan said he looks forward to learning more about Francis, he said he believes one reason he was selected was due to his dedication to the poor and to giving to the poor.Β
