Have You Gotten a Flu Shot?

Following the declaration of a health emergency in Boston earlier this week in light of 700 reported cases of the flu so far this season, some municipalities surrounding Boston have already run out of the flu vaccine.

The announcement sparked a rush to local pharmacies and town-sponsored clinics for flu shots. 

However, while the vaccine may be the best way to protect yourself from contracting the flu, it is only effective approximately 60 percent of the time and may take up to two weeks to for the vaccine to become effective, according to a WBUR report. 

The efficacy of a flu vaccination depends on several variables, according to the Centers For Disease Control, from how old you are to "the degree of similarity between the viruses in the vaccine and those in circulation."
