Our top stories this week include the sentencing of a disbarred Bedford attorney, the reaction in town to the election of a new Pope, town election results and more.

Maureen Pomeroy, a disbarred Bedford attorney who stole more than $810,000 from former clients,Β .Β In addition to using some of this money for personal gain, Pomeroy used some of the money stolen from her elderly client to pay two clients from whom she had previously misappropriated money, according to a statement from the Attorney General's office.

Pope Francis l was elected to the papacy on Wednesday, and while white smoke rose from the Vatican, Catholics here in Bedford were rejoicing in their own way.Β

While there was a 100 percent increase in foreclosure deeds in Bedford this January compared to a year prior, the sample size is small as there was only one foreclosure deed in 2013 and none in January 2012. Foreclosure deeds represent a completed foreclosure, according to the Warren Group press release.

TheΒ Bedford Municipal Housing TrustΒ is now accepting applications for the small grants program, which awards up to $3000 to eligible applicants for home repair projects with no obligation to repay,Β according to the town website.Β

Of 9,844 registered voters in Bedford, only 764 turned out to vote in the March 9 Annual Town Elections, a 7.76 percent voter turnout. With only two contested races,Β there weren't too many surprises results from this year's elections, buthere's a by-the-numbers look at each race in town based on the official results from the Town Clerk.Β The race garnering the most votes was for Library Trustee, an uncontested race with all three candidates up for reelection. The top vote getter of the day was Town Moderator Betsey Anderson with 641 votes, earning another three year term.Β
