5 Things: Spring Break, Seniors Discussing Hemingway and Songs
Events occurring in Belmont on April 12.

1. Today starts the week-long Spring Break for the Belmont School District, during which serveral clubs and programs head out of state and the country for education and cultural visits.
2. The Senior Book Discussion Group will meet at 11 a.m. at the Beech Street Center. This month's book is "A Farewell to Arms," by Ernest Hemingway.
3. Well-loved local musician Liz Buchanan performs original songs and traditional favorites in the Assembly Room of Belmont Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

4. The Gallery@BMC located in the Belmont Media Center, 2 Lexington St., is hosting the exhibit "How I See It" by photographer Diane Hardy. The photos were taken over the course of the past two years in New England, California, New York, Florida and Belize on her iPhone using the app “Hipstamatic.” The featured images have not been altered in any way with post-processing, giving each image a distinct look in this age of Photoshop. The Center is open from noon to 8 p.m., Monday to Fridays and noon to 5p.m. on Saturday.
5. On this day in 1955, the polio vaccine, developed by Dr. Jonas Salk, is declared safe and effective.
