Belmont Softball Takes First of the Season over Cambridge

Marauders go 1-2 in first week of play verses non-league opponents.

Belmont High School Softball took their first win of the season, trouncing visiting Cambridge Rindge and Latin in a slug-fest, 21-14, at Belmont's Softball Field Friday, April 5.

Junior pitcher Kendal Brown ripped a pair of solo home runs while senior shortstop and co-captain Daphne Assimakopolous contributed with a RBI double, a two-run home run while scoring three. 

Freshman third baseman Julia Rifkin had one of Belmont's 10 hits and scored four of Belmont's runs while fellow 9th graders Katrina Rizzuto and Rebecca Tananbaum – each called up for the game from junior varsity – contributed; Rizzuto with a two-run double and Tananbaum an RBI single.

"It was a great team win and what we needed to wipe the slate and restart and refocus us as a team as we head into league play next week," said Head Coach 

Stacie Marino.

In the team's first two games of the season – a 20-8 home loss to North Middlesex High on Wednesday, April 3 and a opening day defeat, 12-5, at Wayland – several players got off to solid starts.

Junior outfielder Micaela McKay went 3 for 3 including a home run and an RBI double while freshman pitcher Sophia Cellucci had a double against North Middlesex while senior co-captain second baseman Katlyn Noonan scored a run as Assimakopolous hit a RBI double and a solo homer and freshman pitcher Sophia Cellucci batted in a run with a single aganist Wayland.

Senior first baseman Sarah Kulbersh (1 RBI double), senior Renee Eurdolian (one run scored) and utility player and senior Sara Jo (a run scored) also contributed.
