Belmont Week in Review: Pool Has Its Designer, Paving Starting in the Center

What happened in the past week in Belmont.

The committee leading the effort to build a new Underwood Pool has reached a milestone with the selection of a designer and project manager and will soon hold a public meeting to update residents on the process.

Belmont has joined several suburban communities on an advisory committee concerning increased noise generated by aircraft departing Logan Airport. But it appears that the hurdle facing municipalities in dialing down the sound level will be fairly steep as the new flight paths were created with safety and efficiency in mind.

The are working all night as Belmont Center has become the epicenter of paving road work that will take place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The new Joey's Park adjacent to the Winn Brook School is now officially open and the site has been turned over to the town from the Friends groups that built it.

Belmont Police are warning residents of a marked increase in attempted phone fraud.

Cushing Square businesses hosts Tricks or Treats for kids (and parents) in the annual Halloween Extravaganza. 

Belmont High School English teacher Lisa Hurtubise was honored the Boston Harvard Club with its 2013 Excellence in Teaching Award, one of four awarded in New England.

In Sports: Field Hockey fell in the first round of the North Division 1 tournament to Lexington only days after learning they were placed in the top division for the first time in its history due to a spike in female enrollment at the High School. Boys' Golf placed third in the state tourney, the best showing in school history and Cross Country sophomore standout Leah Brams defended her Middlesex League Championship.
