Stephen Burt at 'Author Talk' and Halloween Events Around Town

Events happening this week in Belmont.

Poet, critic and Belmont resident Stephen Burt will discuss adulthood, fatherhood and daily life in the suburbs in his third collection of poetry, "Belmont: Poems" at Belmont Public Library's "Author Talk" this Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Assembly Room. All are welcome to attend this free program. Books will be available for sale and signing.

The businesses of Cushing Square will be treating all the gouls and goblins to only treats in the annual Halloween Extravaganza of Candy and Fun on Halloween afternoon, Thursday, Oct. 31, in the square (Common Street and Trapelo Road) from 3 p.m. to  6 p.m.

Also on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31, Stacey Peasley and her band are coming to the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library for a rocking Halloween show for preschoolers. Don't forget your costumes, kids. The show starts at 10:30 a.m.

The Belmont High School Wind Ensemble and Orchestra will perform an hour-long free Family Halloween Masquerade Concert on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at Belmont High School, 221 Concord Ave. Come hear the "Imperial March" from Star Wars, selections from "Phantom of the Opera" and Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" as well as a special guest who will appear for the classic "Monster Mash." Audience members are encouraged to dress in costume!

Sports fans will find out Tuesday (hopefully) the MIAA tournament pairings for the fall sports. And it's likely that Belmont could be seeing one, if not two, of its teams playing home playoff games: Both Field Hockey and Boys' Soccer should be hosting matches at Harris Field in the Division 2 North Sectionals; for Boys' Soccer, it would be their first home playoff game in the past decade.
