Bon Fire Planned for Sunday Night

Five things to know - a great way to start the day with a quick look at the events and happenings in the city.

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Friday, Jan. 24.

1. Repeat: There’s not a whole lot different about the weather on Friday than we’ve seen all week. The high temperature will be in the teens with sunny skies. A west wind will blow up to 15 miles per hour, bringing the wind chill factor down to -10 degrees.

2. Bon Fire: The annual Christmas tree fire and flag disposal ceremony in Beverly Farms in Sunday night at West Beach. The event gets started at sundown, which is about 5 p.m. Christmas tree without ropes or wire should be brought down to the beach and the Michael J. Cadigan Jr. American Legion Post No. 46 will be burning unserviceable flags.

4. Mikado: The Mikado takes the stage at Gordon College this weekend, at the college just over the Beverly line on Grapevine Road in Wenham. There are shows on Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. The college’s departments of music and theatre arts combine to put on the Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera at the A.J. Gordon Chapel, featuring colorful costumes, elaborate sets and a full orchestra.Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, $8 for Gordon alumni, $5 for Gordon students, faculty and staff and $5 for children 12 and under.

5. Cummings: Sunday is the deadline for Cummings Properties employees to select a local charity to benefit from a $1,000 grant from the company. The Employee Directed Giving initiative involves all of the company's full-time employees, including the 20 who live in Beverly, and allows each of them to choose a charity to receive a $1,000 donation from Cummings Properties. The donations will be made in early February.
