FBI Agent to Offer Info about Keeping Kids Safe on the Internet

Five things to know - a great way to start the day with a quick look at the events and happenings in the city.

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

1. Freezing: Temperatures return to the icebox on Tuesday, with a high temperature of 20 degrees. The sun will be out, but the wind will gust from the west up to 25 miles per hour, creating a wind chill factor as low as -2 degrees.

2. Internet Safety: FBI Special Agent Scott McGaunn will speak to parents on Tuesday night at Cape Ann Waldorf School in North Beverly about Internet safety for children. McGaunn, a parent at the school, will discuss aspects of the Internet of which most people are unaware and ways to keep children safe online, according to an announcement by the school. The event is open to the public and appropriate for adults age 18 and up. The school is at Moraine Farm, on Route 97.

3. Discovery Night: St. Mary School hosts a Discovery Night on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. where families with children age preschool through 8th grade can play fun educational games and see demonstrations to see what the school is like. The event, at the school on Chapman Street, is open to all.

4. Unemployment: We will get the latest unemployment numbers on Tuesday, when the state Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the unemployment numbers for every community in the state, including Beverly.

5. State of the State: Both Gov. Deval Patrick and President Barack Obama will appear on television this evening, delivering speeches to offer updates about the state and federal government, respectively. Patrick is scheduled to start his speech at 7 p.m. from the House Chambers at the State House and it will air on several local TV stations. Patrick’s speech will start at 9 p.m. and air on all the national networks.
