Grant Money Could be Available for Gloucester Crossing Streets, Sidewalks and Playground

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Friay, Jan. 17.

1. 40s: The temperature is forecasted to return to the low 40s on Friday with partly sunny skies. There will be a very light southwest wind.

2. Volunteering: Again on Friday, North Shore United Way will host an open house at its office at 248 Cabot St. from noon to 5 p.m., where anyone who shows up will get to see a short demonstrations of the United Way’s new volunteer website and find “meaningful volunteer opportunities” all over the North Shore, including in Beverly.

3. Sculpture: An exhibit of sculptures and paintings from Beverly Seamans opens on Friday at the House of Seven Gables in Salem. The exhibit runs through Jan. 31 and includes figures and animals cast in bronze plus some of Seamans' watercolors. 

4. Gloucester Crossing: There is an opportunity for the Gloucester Crossing neighborhood to get a grant to help pay for street, sidewalk, playground and housing improvements, according to the North Shore Community Development Corp. There is a meeting scheduled for Friday morning at 10 a.m. at City Hall to talk more about the grant possibility. Coffee will be served and it is open to the public.

5. Weekend: Don’t forget, we’re headed in to a long weekend where there is no school on Monday and some businesses and most government offices will also be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day to honor the civil rights leader.
