MLK Day Closes Schools, Government Offices, Delays Trash Pickup

Five things to know - a great way to start the day with a quick look at the events and happenings in the city.

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Monday, Jan. 20.

1. Transition: Monday will be the transition, weatherwise, between the typical winter weather of the past few days and some bitterly cold weather for the rest if the week. The temperature will get into the upper 30s with some strong winds, gusting up to 25 miles per hour out of the southwest. The sky will be partly sunny with a chance of light snow in the afternoon.

2. Lovely: State Senator Joan Lovely (D-Salem), who represents Beverly, will tour Custom Medicine on Cabot Street on Monday morning. Lovely will be there to speak with the owners about the impact of a new law regulating compounding pharmacies.

3. National Parks: There is no entrance fee at all of the National Parks on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Every day, more than half of the National Parks do not have a fee. Monday’s fee-free day waives the fee at Adams National Historical Park in Quincy, Cape Cod National Seashore and Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in New Hampshire.

4. MLK: It is Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, a federal holiday in honor the civil rights leader who was assassinated in 1968. The holiday was first observed in 1986. Schools and government offices are closed on Monday, as are some businesses. There will be no trash pickup.

5. City Council: The Beverly City Council typically meets for a full meeting on the third Monday of the month, but because of the holiday the council will instead meet on Tuesday night this week. The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the City Council chambers where the council will take a final vote on several appointments to Mayor Mike Cahill's administration, among other business.
