Boston Primary Election Results 2019
Incumbents Michelle Wu, Annissa Essaibi George and Michael Flaherty were the top vote-getters in a Boston City Council primary.

BOSTON — Now that the voters — some 137,180 people — decided who will be on the November ballot for city councilor, the remaining candidates will likely kick their campaign efforts into overdrive.
Incumbents Michelle Wu, Annissa Essaibi George and Michael Flaherty were the top vote-getters Tuesday. And after the dust cleared, Julia Mejia edged incumbent Althea Garrison for the fourth-highest vote total, while Alejandra Nicole Stguillen, Erin Murphy and David Halbert rounded out the eight to secure spots on the November ballot.
Voter turnout was low for the primary: At noon only 3.73 percent or 15,009 voters had cast ballots, according to the city election's department. By 3 p.m., voter turnout was up to 5.8 percent of registered voters or 23,340 people. At 6 p.m., voter turnout was 35,851, or 8.9 percent of registered voters. In total, 137,180 people cast ballots.

The at-large candidate race was the biggest, with 15 vying for one of eight spots on the Nov. 5 ballot. Althea Garrison, who was the distant runner-up when Ayanna Pressley was elected last year, slid into the Pressley's spot when she went on to Congress. Garrison is seen as bit of an irritant on the more progressive City and her seat is the one pundits say is mostly in question. A recent report by Commonwealth Magazine on which Boston officials answer emails from the public said Garrison was among three city councilors who failed to respond.
