BOSTON – A new park, complete with water features and a pirate ship, is almost ready for children to take the helm and head out on the open sea of their imagination. "Martin's Park," which is being built next to Boston Children’s Museum, honors 8-year-old Martin Richard, the youngest Boston Marathon bombing victim. Richard grew up in Dorchester and enjoyed playing in parks with his friends.
During a campaign visit to Boston on Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden toured the playground with Mayor Marty Walsh.
MacKay Construction broke ground on the park two years ago. Crews then adjusted slightly after the climate change report came out last year, in an effort to ensure the park could withstand possible rising waters.

Following the news that the park would soon be opening, Martin's family posted a note.
"Growing up in Dorchester, Martin spent much of his time playing with Henry, Jane and their friends at many of the fields and playgrounds throughout the city," reads a statement on the Martin Richard Foundation website. "Martin's Park will be a symbol of Martin's welcoming, inclusive nature as well as his idea of an ideal park. This unique, public, outdoor space will ensure that Martin's legacy remains a vibrant and positive influence for future generations. We hope that Martin's Park brings hours of joy to children and is counted on their list of favorite parks."

The $7 million park, is at the Children's Warf Park, 64 Sleeper St. — or the Smith Family Waterfront in the Seaport District, next to the Children's Museum. It's set to open June 15.
Thank you VP Biden for visiting Martin's Park to learn more about Climate Ready Boston, our initiative to prepare for the impacts of climate change. This new inclusive playground will protect the Seaport from sea level rise and flooding. We look forward to its opening on 06/15! pic.twitter.com/P0ZzLhuaO6
