Woman Rescued From Burning New Bedford Building Thursday Night Dies
The woman was in her 70s, officials said.
NEW BEDFORD, MA — A woman rescued from a burning building in New Bedford Thursday night has died, officials said.
“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones who are mourning today,” New Bedford Fire Chief Brian Medeiros said in a media release.

“This is a terrible loss for them and our City,” Medeiros said.
Firefighters responded to an 8:30 p.m. blaze on Elm Street between Newton and Pierce streets, according to the release.

"While en route, they received additional information that there were residents trapped on the second and third floors of the multi-family home," the release said.
"On arrival, firefighters observed fire coming from the second floor and heavy smoke coming from the second and third floors," the release said. "They immediately made entry through an interior stairwell and over ground ladders to attack the fire and rescue any occupants."

Firefighters located a woman in her 70s on the third floor and removed her from the building, according to the release.
The woman, who was in critical condition, was taken to an area hospital and later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she succumbed to her injuries, the release said.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation, according to the release, but does not appear suspicious.
"Nearly a dozen residents have been displaced from their homes and are being assisted by the Red Cross," the release said. "The New Bedford Emergency Management Agency, New Bedford Police, and Providence Canteen provided assistance at the scene."
