Taunton Apartment Blaze Puts 4 In Hospital, Displaces Residents: Report

TAUNTON, MA — A Taunton apartment complex fire put four in the hospital and displaced more than a dozen residents early Tuesday morning, according to reports.

Five residents, including a family of three with a small child, were rescued and all residents of the Taunton Gardens apartments on Hopkins Road were accounted for, WPRI reported.

"Fire Chief Steven Lavigne said it was a very stubborn fire and the cold made it a challenge," per WPRI. Crews were more bundled up, which impacted their movements and restricted hose placement.

WCVB said resident Mark Messier told of watching TV when he heard noises and went out to discover the fire.

"All I heard was a few big bangs, people were arguing. I came outside and everything was on fire," Messier said in the WCVB story.

"This has never happened, anything like this before," Messier said in the WCVB post. "So, this is a tragedy."

Another Taunton Gardens resident, Susan Piwowaraski, told 10 Boston a neighbor alerted her to the fire.

"She said she opened her door and smoke filled her room," according to 10 Boston. "She was able to make it out safely, but everything in her apartment, including the Christmas gifts she had just bought, are believed to have been destroyed."
