In 1894, Willie Campbell helped add three new holes and redesign the original six. Five years later, the club expanded to 18 holes, and William Flynn designed a third nine, which is called Primrose, in 1927.

The course used for championships is a composite that incorporates three and a half holes from the Primrose. Geoffrey Cornish made changes before the 1963 U.S. Open., Rees Jones supervised revisions before the 1988 U.S. Open, and Gil Hanse oversaw a course restoration before the 2013 U.S. Amateur.
