B.A.A. To Recognize First Responders Who Saved Runner's Life

The honorees provided life-saving care to Meghan Roth, a Boston Marathon participant who suffered a cardiac event during the race.

BROOKLINE, MA — The Boston Athletic Association will host a ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 10 to recognize the first responders who saved a runner's life at the 125th Boston Marathon.

The event will begin at 1 p.m. at Natick Fire Headquarters, located at 22 E Central Street, and include a speaking program featuring remarks from Tom Grilk, President & CEO of the B.A.A., Daniel Dow, Deputy Chief of Operations for the Natick Fire Department, and Dr. David Morris, Medical Control Doctor for Natick Fire Department.

The following first responders will then receive honorary medals for providing immediate, life-saving care to Meghan Roth, a Boston Marathon participant who suffered a cardiac event near mile eight:

  • Paramedic Mark Jacobs, Brewster Ambulance
  • Field Supervisor/Paramedic Ken Reynolds, Brewster Ambulance
  • Tom Grilk, President & CEO of the B.A.A.
  • Chris Troyanos, Medical Coordinator for the Boston Marathon

One additional honoree, Dr. Jochen D. Muehlschlegel, is unable to attend because he is away on a medical mission trip to Rwanda. Muehlschlegel, the attending cardiovascular anesthesiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, was running in the marathon when he stopped to administer CPR on Roth.

Roth is unable to attend the event but will send a written note to the first responders who saved her life. The honorees will also be presented with a gift on behalf of the B.A.A.
