Boston Phoenix to Close After 47 Years
The independently owned Boston Phoenix announced on Thursday afternoon it had published its last issue.
The Boston Phoenix, the independently owned Boston newspaper known for its coverage of politics, arts and music, will shut down after 47 years, the paper announced on Thursday.
Its Friday, March 15 issue will be its final print publication.
"The timing comes as a shock, but the news isn't a surprise," wrote Editor Carly Carioli in a farewell blog post.

Carioli described that even though the Phoenix was in the process of reinventing itself as a weekly magazine to stay afloat with national advertisers, the publication ran out of money, and out of time.
"In the end the money is what matters," she wrote. "Local advertising remained strong, but the uptick in national business we hoped for never materialized. Still, we thought we had a little more time."

The company's online radio station, WFNX.com, is also closing. The company's two other Phoenix publications, located in Providence and Portland, will remain in operation.
The Phoenix's offices were located at 126 Brookline Ave. in Fenway-Kenmore.
