Brookline Ending Halloween Season With Eco-Friendly Event

Residents can properly dispose of pumpkins and other decorations in a fun way.

BROOKLINE, MA — The town’s third annual post-Halloween Pumpkin Toss and Costume Drive is taking place on Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Farmers Market parking lot on West Centre Street.

The five-hour event will begin at 1:30 p.m. where residents can come periodically throughout the day to dispose of pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns properly in a compost collection truck provided Black Earth Compost through a competitive tossing game.

In addition, the Department of Public Works will also be collecting costumes that will be donated to the Lincoln School for its Pumpkinfest next October.

DPW Zero Waste Program Manager Miranda Hotham said the event resulted in the composting of nearly two tons of pumpkins. According to the town, more than 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins are discarded across the U.S. each fall, heavily contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

Participants are being asked to remove any non-biodegradable materials, such as paint, wax, candles, or glitter before composting.
