BROOKLINE, MA — The police department is warning against a scam in which the perpetrators are pretending to be officers.

According to Sergeant Rob Disario, the scammers claim to have important documents for the victim and give them a different phone number to call. When the victim calls, they’re instructed to send money via cryptocurrency or else they will go to jail. The caller Identification on the numbers are being altered to appear as though they are coming from Brookline police.

The department emphasized that it would never solicit money from residents over the phone or in any other capacity. This type of scam was also reported from community members at the same time last year.

“If you ever receive a call like this, first confirm what police department they’re calling from and what their name is,” Disario said. “Next, inform the person you’ll call the main dispatch number of that police department and if they are who they claim to be, the call taker will put them in touch.”
