Brookline's Beantown Bed and Biscuit Brings a New Spin on Dog Daycare

Brookline dog lovers rejoice! Now you can have someone watch your dog in a safe, clean and friendly play space in Coolidge Corner.

Dog lovers of Brookline, Beantown Bed and Biscuit is the first full-service cageless dog community with a full-scale veterinary clinic, grooming service, play space and training facility.

“There was no such thing as a daycare center with a vet around this area,” Owner John Cleveland said. “We offer free pick-up and drop-off for all day daycare.”

Cleveland had taken his dog to a similar facility in in his hometown in North Carolina. Cleveland, 29, came up to Boston from Charlotte, North Carolina to come see a game at Fenway Park and fell in love with the area. Cleveland started a dogsitting business in a three-bedroom apartment two years ago.

He met his business partner, Adam Van Der Beek at the dog park at Amory Park and the two came up with a plan to create a space for dogs and their owners could come for all of their needs.

“We wanted to create a special place where pets can play in a clean, safe atmosphere,” Cleveland said. Cleveland said that “dog daycare/knnels” were not listed as a use in the Town’s Zoning By-Laws.  Van Der Beek and Cleveland worked together to change the existing zoning laws to open their Coolidge Corner facility.

Beantown offers daycare and boarding, plus walking services. The play space is a 1,800 square foot playroom in which dogs get to run around and play under constant supervision of Beantown’s trained staff. The facility can hold up to 50 dogs at one time.

Anyone interested in bringing their dog to play or stay at Beantown needs to be approved. A new dog is introduced to five or six dogs at a time. “We look to see if their tails are wagging or if the hair on their backs goes up,” Cleveland said. “You can tell pretty much instantly if it’s going to work out.”

Dogs are welcome for $5 per hour or $35 for a full day.
