BROOKLINE, MA — Two School Committee members are facing backlash after not publicly disclosing their marriage to each other, according to a report from Brookline News.

Chair Valerie Frias and member Andy Liu got married in June, and now own a house together. Massachusetts conflict of interest law prohibits appointed and elected municipal employees from acting in a way that “would cause a reasonable person to think that they would show favor toward someone or that she can be improperly influenced.”

Frias and Liu said they consulted with the committee’s lawyer and the State Ethics Commission about their relationship. The ethics commission could neither confirm nor deny that they were contacted.
