BROOKLINE, MA — With the onset of spring and the approach of summer, the Brookline Police and Fire Departments are warning the community about the danger of mulch fires and how to prevent them.

According to the departments, improper disposal of lit cigarettes and matches are a leading cause of mulch fires. A lit cigarette can secretly smolder for hours before creating a blaze.
“Even in seemingly damp conditions, the interior of mulch beds can be sufficiently dry to support combustion,” the police department said in a statement.

Smokers are advised to ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished before they are disposed of, throw out cigarettes in appropriate receptacles, and especially not to throw cigarettes out of moving vehicles.
