Brookline Youth Awards To Recognize 106 Young People

BROOKLINE, MA — The president of the Coolidge Corner Theatre and a Brookline High School teacher will be among those honored at the 11th annual Brookline Youth Awards at the Coolidge next month.

The Brookline Hub will recognize 106 students and four adults at 7 p.m. May 8.

The Youth Awards was founded in 2011 by local filmmaker and philanthropist Harvey Bravman is held at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Last year it was held virtually because of the pandemic. But this year, the spring award ceremony comes as the Coolidge is set to reopen. Some of those recognized will be able to participate in person, and it will also be viewable on Brookline Interactive Group channels and online.

The Brookline Youth Awards is an opportunity for Brookline residents to hear about the character, challenges, and dreams of its young people as well as adults dedicated to their success, through video interviews.

• Ethel Weiss Service Award Honoree: Katherine Tallman, of the Coolidge Corner Theatre. The Ethel Weiss Service Award began in 2015 to honor the Brookline businessperson who best exemplifies service, commitment and passion toward Brookline young people. It was first given to Ethel Weiss of Irving's Card and Toy Shop that same year.
• Roger Grande Social Justice Award: The award, introduced in 2012, is named after a "transcendent" Brookline High School teacher who inspires young people in the area of social justice. This year the award goes to Joslyn Vendola, a math teacher at the high school.
• Suriel Guerrero Parents of the Year: Lisa Irvings and Michael Brill
