The year-long celebration of barrier-breaking films coincides with the groundbreaking of the nonprofit theatre's expansion project.
BROOKLINE, MA — The Coolidge Corner Theatre has announced the early lineup for its 2022 Big Screen Classics series, Groundbreaking Films, which coincides with the groundbreaking of its $12.5 million expansion project.
The series kicks off on Monday, Jan. 10 with a 70mm screening of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A
Space Odyssey, which remains one of the most influential films of all time. The week of Jan. 17, the theatre will screen Kathleen Collins’s rarely-seen Losing Ground, one of the first feature films directed by an African American woman.
Other films in the series include Wong Kar Wai’s emotionally raw gay romance, Happy Together, Spike Lee’s epic biopic Malcolm X, Akira Kurosawa’s riveting psychological thriller Rashomon, and Gina Price-Bythewood’s sports romance Love & Basketball.

“In addition to representing some of the best and most innovative films of the past century,
these titles are all going to look fantastic on our big screen,” said Director of Special
Programming Mark Anastasio in a statement. “They are the perfect way to celebrate our expansion groundbreaking and to amplify some of cinema’s most essential—and in some cases, underrepresented—voices.”
In June 2021, the theatre announced The Campaign for the Coolidge, a $12.5 million expansion project that will add 14,000 square feet to the existing building, including two new, state-of-the art screens and a new Community Education and Engagement Center. Construction commenced in November 2021, and is expected to take 12 to 13 months to complete.
