Ghost Bike Memorial To Be Held For Brookline Children's Librarian

Paula Sharaga was riding her bike in the Fenway area Saturday when she was killed after a crash with a cement truck.

BROOKLINE, MA — Flowers and cards showed up outside the library in the days following the news that Paula Sharaga, who’d worked as a Children's librarian at the Coolidge Corner branch of the town library for some two decades, was killed by a cement truck on Friday afternoon in the Fenway area.

Saturday, a memorial known as a "Ghost Bike" will be held to honor the woman who many - from Brookline to Boston to Cambridge - had come to know and love.

If you've driven near Longwood, you may have seen one chained to a fence along Carlton Street after a young man was killed riding his bike there. Ghost Bikes are memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit while riding. A bike is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque.

The ceremonies pop up to honor cyclists who have died in crashes and to spread awareness of bike safety and road safety.

"It is a profound act of devotion to gather and make visible with our bodies what is so often invisible on our roads," tweeted Rev. Laura Everett.
