BROOKLINE, MA — The following letter to the editor was submitted by Brookline resident Amy Davidson.

It has been 50 years since the enactment of Title IX, the federal law that is celebrated for bringing about changes in athletics at colleges and universities that led to women such as Katie Ledecky and Sue Bird excelling at sports. Title IX also brought about important protections against harassment based on sex in education. Under Title IX, colleges and universities must respond to incidences of sexual harassment, including sexual assault, regularly. Unfortunately, data shows that Title IX is still needed in this area.

I believe all aspects of Title IX regulations are still necessary to protect against discrimination based on gender and sexual identity. I am pleased that the Biden administration has taken steps to strengthen Title IX regulations that were weakened by the former U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and that our current Attorney General Maura Healey, a former professional basketball player who benefited from Title IX, fought to prevent Betsy DeVos from making those changes.

If elected Governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey will work hard to ensure that Title IX regulations are implemented fairly throughout the state. Anyone concerned about the fair implementation of Title IX protections should support Maura Healey for governor.
