3 MA Lawmakers Propose Statewide Tobacco Bill: Report

The proposed bill would prohibit nicotine and tobacco sales to anyone born after a certain date.

BROOKLINE, MA — Three state legislators are planning to file a bill that prohibits sales of tobacco and nicotine products to people born after a certain date, according to a report from MassLive.

State Reps. Tommy Vitolo, Kate Lipper-Garabedian and State Sen. Jason Lewis are proposing The Nicotine Free Generation Bill, which would replace the state’s current policy of not selling products to those under the age of 21.

The bill would reportedly be very similar to a 2021 bylaw passed in Brookline in which all tobacco and nicotine sales were prohibited to people born after Jan. 1, 2000 on a lifetime basis. The municipalities of Concord, Malden, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, and Winchester have since followed with similar bylaws.
