Hey Roger—Why’s Stop & Shop Still Selling Caged Eggs?

Why is Stop & Shop president Roger Wheeler ignoring his company's animal welfare promises?

(Jim Curran)

During the Boston Marathon, a banner flew overhead reading: “Roger Wheeler Cheats. AholdScandal.com.” The message circled Stop & Shop headquarters and the Boston area, and pointed to a troubling truth: Stop & Shop, led by president Roger Wheeler, has broken its promise to go 100% cage-free.

As a Boston area resident, this deeply disappoints me. The company made a clear public commitment to phase out cruel battery cages by 2025, and failed to follow through. These cages are so small that hens can’t even spread their wings or walk around. As a Stop & Shop customer, that’s not something I want to support.

While Stop & Shop sells 100% cage-free eggs in Massachusetts and other states where it’s illegal not to, it continues to sell eggs from caged hens in states without those protections. But true leadership means doing the right thing everywhere, not just where the law requires it.

I urge Roger Wheeler, Stop & Shop, and Ahold Delhaize to honor their original pledge and go 100% cage-free at all stores. Our community—and the animals—deserve better.
