CAMBRIDGE, MA — President Donald Trump and his administration froze $2.2 billion of multi-year federal grants and contracts for Harvard University after the school refused to follow a list of demands sent by the administration, according to a report from NPR.

The demands include closing its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, implementing a mask ban and adopting merit-based admissions and hiring policies. Harvard President Alan Garber asserted his belief that the government should be able to dictate to a private institution how to conduct its hiring process and who it can admit.

According to the federal government, the University stands to lose approximately $9 billion in federal funding overall. Recently, Harvard borrowed $750 million from Goldman Sachs in taxable bonds.
