DANVERS, MA — Some Danvers residents will be without electricity for fans and air conditioning on the hottest night of the past several years as a daylong power outage is expected to last well into the evening.

The Danvers Department of Public Works said late Tuesday afternoon that the power that was out for a significant swath of the town on Tuesday should be restored by early Tuesday evening. But it said that residents on Burroughs Street, Rice Street, Larchmont Street and John Street are expected to remain without power overnight.

Danvers police said the outage affected several traffic signals and advised drivers to use extra caution at intersections and treat any non-functioning lights as a four-way stop.

In response, the town is opening a temporary cooling center at the high school cafeteria (60 Cabot Road). The center opened at 4:30 p.m. and was to remain open until 10 p.m.

Individuals planning to use the center should bring:
• Snacks and beverages
• Personal medications
• Charging cords for electronic devices

Town staff will be on-site to provide assistance to those in need asked to enter the high school through the atrium doors.

Residents affected by the overnight outage are encouraged to reach out to friends and family to make alternative overnight accommodations if they are not comfortable remaining at home, town officials said.
