Danvers Won't Pay Spring Sports Coaches

DANVERS, MA — Danvers High School's spring sports coaches won't receive their stipends this year after the MIAA canceled the entire season.

According to the Danvers Herald, which first reported this story, the decision was made by the school district's administration and the plan to not pay coaches was not brought to the school committee. The stipends had been budgeted for $58,900 and other districts, including Beverly, have opted to pay coaches a portion of their stipends.

"I happen to think that all teachers and town workers should be paid their full salaries, because they are working, and in very unusual conditions," school committee member Eric Crane told the newspaper. "But on the other hand, when you start to get to stipends above and beyond regular salaries that aren’t really happening I don’t think it’s unreasonable to decide not to pay them."
