Former Danvers Gymnastics Teacher Charged With Child Assault: Essex DA

The Essex County DA's Office said the accusations date back to the early 2000s at gymnastics academies in Danvers and North Andover.

DANVERS, MA — A former gymnastics teacher in Danvers and North Andover was arraigned in Salem Superior Court on Thursday on charges of indecent assault of a child dating back two decades.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office said Dewayne Davenport, 53, was a gymnastics teacher at Yellow Jacket Gymnastics in Danvers and the former Palaestra Gymnastics Academy in North Andover in the early 2000s when the accused crimes were charged to have occured.

He pleaded not guilty on Thursday to two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years old.

Davenport was released on personal recognizance with conditions to stay away from and have no contact with the alleged victims and witnesses. The DA's Office said it provided a list of people that the defendant may not contact or go near as part of Davenport’s conditional release.

Davenport is scheduled to return to court for a compliance hearing on Oct. 2 at 9:30 a.m.
