Tips for Dog Owners During a Heat Wave

Today's weather calls for extreme heat. Here are some tips to keep your dog happy and safe.

The National Weather Service says temperatures could reach upwards of 100 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

While we humans try our best to stay cool, what about our four legged companions with a thick coat of fur?

We turned to owner, Anne Springer, for some tips to keep our pups safe in extreme heat.

Here's what Springer had to say:

  • Of course the biggest thing is *never* to leave an animal in a car, even "for a minute."
  • One thing that we humans tend to forget, because we wear shoes, is how hot asphalt gets on a very hot day!  So, best to limit walks and outdoor time to grassy surfaces or shady trails.
  • Animals, even those that are used to exercise, can dehydrate quickly on an exceptionally hot day, so having plenty of fresh water available is important.
  • Also, know the signs of overheating, as it can lead to heatstroke.  (Panting, noisy breathing, appearing lethargic or disoriented, bright red or blue gums, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions.)  If you see such signs that the animal is in trouble, wet him or her with cool (not cold) tap water, and head to the vet.  Have the phone number for the nearest 24 hour vet hospital on your refrigerator and in your wallet!  It's better than trying to find it in an emergency.
