Danvers residents dunked into the Atlantic to start the new year at the first annual Freeze Your Onions Off.

If there was one year to begin an annual New Year's Day ocean-dip, 2012 would be it.

With temperatures spiking up to 50 degrees, about 11 degrees higher than the town's average on New Year's Day, and the latest ocean temperature for Boston registering almost 44 degrees, or about 4 degrees warmer than the typical for Boston waters in January, the weather was prime.

Roughly 20 brave folks took their dip into the water at 12:30. Participants and spectators brought canned goods and donated $10, all to benefit the .
