Modern Square Dancing – Family Fun for All Ages

If you can walk briskly you should be able to square dance.

Modern square dancing offers something for everyone. It’s a fun way of meeting and interacting with people that is much more personal than chatting on computers or cell phones. And contrary to old stereotypes, you won’t find the dance hall filled with old cow pokes trotting to ancient country and western songs. Regular street clothes is worn by most dancers.

If you are looking for a way to increase physical and mental exercise, modern square dancing can do that. Others get involved to meet people. Singles and couples, young and old, are welcomed. If you can walk briskly you should be able to square dance.

Modern square dancing is done to a wide variety of songs. As long as the rhythm is correct, the square dance caller can adapt a song for all to enjoy.

People from all walks of life enjoy modern square dancing for many reasons. But a common theme is the fun found in working together to complete various movements, while getting aerobic exercise at the same time. Dancers say there is a feeling of accomplishment when they complete a set of calls. Many also find it a great stress reliever.

The covid pandemic has been hard on area square dance clubs but Riverside Square Dance Club, Inc. is working to keep this fun activity alive. They are offering 2 free opportunities to give square dancing a try, while wearing a mask during these times - an introduction night on Thursday, February 3rd from 7:00 - 9:00 PM and on Saturday, February 5th from a 7:00 - 8:00 PM before the clubs regular monthly dance. Both of these events take place at Middleton Congregational Church, 66 Maple St (Rt. 62) Middleton, MA. Then on Thursday, February 10 the 10 week class session begins. They run from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at a cost of $85 per person.
