At the start of the new year we mentioned that the Route 128 construction in Danvers would be . Wondering what exactly is happening right now to make that happen?

Here's the latest from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation:

  • Soil Remediation – To date, the contractor has removed and transported approximately 11,100 tons of contaminated soil to a licensed disposal facility.  Approval was recently received from Boston Environmental to remove the remaining soils.  This work is anticipated to commence in mid January.
  • Bridge Replacement - Traffic on Route 128 was previously switched over to the central portion of the newly completed bridge over the railroad corridor.  The second phase of bridge work is substantially complete.  There are several minor work items related to the concrete deck surface that remain.
  • Retaining wall/Sound wall – The contractor is installing the chain link fence on top of the wall caps.
  • Drainage – The contractor is working on adjusting/rebuilding drainage structures where feasible.
  • Paving – The binder layer of pavement has been installed on the majority of the new interchange ramps at Route 62 and at Route 35.
  • Roadway and Traffic Signal reconstruction – the traffic signal subcontractor is currently installing the wiring within the underground conduits to connect the signal controller cabinets with the traffic signal posts and heads.
