Dedham Girl Raises Money For Coronavirus Fund With Lemonade Stand

DEDHAM, MA — A young Dedham resident celebrated her sixth birthday uniquely, selling lemonade. But she didn't set up her stand in the hopes of earning cash for a birthday toy or treats — her stand was dedicated to Dedham's COVID-19 Relief Fund.

Kids across the country have been getting creative with their birthday celebrations during the pandemic. Zoom birthday celebrations and car parades were held for children in towns around the Commonwealth, but Dedham's Alice King didn't just get innovative with her birthday, she gave back.

King set up her lemonade stand in her Babcock Place neighborhood with the help of her mom, Shari Krauss, her sister, Sally King, and their neighbors Kathy, Henry, Sammy and Oliver Humphreys.

King manned the stand with her friends and parents, all equip with masks and taking social distancing precautions. It wasn't long before plenty of familiar faces came by the stand for a cold glass of lemonade. Several teachers from the Dedham Early Childhood Education Center stopped by for a glass including Principal Kim Taylor, as well as a Riverdale Elementary School teacher.

King raised a total of $141 for the relief fund, which works to raise money to support expanded food distribution at the Dedham Food Pantry, the Vincent St. De Paul Society and soon, through Southern Middlesex Opportunity Council’s housing relief programs.

Donations to the fund can be made by credit card or through a donor-advised fund online or by sending a check to United Way of Massachusetts Bay, PO Box 51381, Boston, MA 02205-1381. Please make checks out to United Way of Massachusetts Bay and include "Dedham COVID-19 Relief Fund" in the memo of the check.
