House Fire On Hartford Street In Dover

Three people, including an elderly man in a wheelchair, were in the house at the time of the fire.

The Dover Fire Department responded to a house fire on 57 Hartford Street this afternoon.

Dover Fire Chief John Hughes said that the fire was caused by food that was accidentally left burning on the stove in the kitchen of the house.

“The contents on the stove being unattended ignited and the additional contents that were adjacent to the stove just caught up in the fire,” Hughes said.

There were three people in the house at the time of the fire, an elderly man and woman and a younger female family member.

“The younger family member got her mother-in-law out and the dog and then the ambulance responded with police and we took the homeowner, who was in a hospital bed, we took him out,” Hughes said. “He was at the far end of the house, he was never in any jeopardy.”

There were no injuries and Hughes said that the fire was contained to the kitchen.

A man who said he was a neighbor said, “When I came from my side you could only see about 20 percent of the house because there was so much smoke coming out.”

“Well as long as they’re ok. I hope they can use the house,” the neighbor said.

The call came in at 12:25 p.m. Hughes said that because power was shut off to a portion of the house, it would be up to the wiring inspector to determine if the residents could go back to living in the house right away.

Dover, Medfield, and Westwood fire departments all responded to the scene.
