Falmouth Dog Mauling: Community Rallies For Infant
Authorities said a Falmouth father was forced to kill the family dog after it attacked and seriously injured his infant daughter.

FALMOUTH, MA — A Falmouth infant is on the mend after she was attacked and seriously injured by her family's pit bull terrier. The incident happened January 7; police said the infant's father was forced to kill the dog to stop the attack. The infant, Remmy Goulart, suffered serious facial injuries.
Remmy is currently being treated at Boston Children's Hospital for multiple surgeries. An online fundraising effort has raised more than $45,000 for the child's medical expenses.
"There are absolutely no words that exist to express how thankful we are," the girl's mother wrote on the GoFundMe fundraising page.

Falmouth police said the dog attack appeared to be "unprovoked."

"The child was playing in the kitchen with the father nearby," Falmouth police said in a statement. "The family pit-bull terrier attacked the child and bit her in the face causing major trauma. The father immediately attempted to separate the dog from the child, but was unable. He retrieved a pistol from an adjacent room, but when he realized that it was not loaded he grabbed a knife and began stabbing the animal in order to protect the child. The dog was fatally wounded."
The dog was with the family for 5 years and showed no prior signs of aggression, police said.
In an unrelated incident, a Barnstable PetSmart worker was mauled by a dog and seriously injured in December.
