UPDATED: 5 Injured, Including 2 Framingham High Students, in Overnight Ashland Crash

The Kia struck several poles about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, before landing in a swampy area, near Ashland High School on East Union Street.

A Kia vehicle, with five teens, crashed into several poles on East Union Street in Ashland Sunday just before 1:30 a.m.

Ashland and Framingham firefighters had to extricate two of the individuals from the vehicle.

The scanner indicated two were flown by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial in Worcester and three were taken to MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham. One has since been treated and released. She was home recovering on Sunday.

Framingham Patch learned Sunday morning that one of the teens in the vehicle is a Framingham High School football player, who has serious injuries, and will require surgery. He is conscious and talking, however.

Another in the vehicle is a Framingham High junior.

All five in the vehicle have ties to Framingham High School. One in the vehicle graduated from Framingham High in 2012.

Framingham Patch knows the names of all five individuals in the vehicle, three males and two females, but has chosen, at this time, not to publish those names.

Framingham High Principal Elyse Torbert sent an email to staff Sunday night after 6 p.m.

In it she wrote: β€œWe were informed this afternoon that two current Framingham High School students as well as three former Framingham High School students were involved in a serious car accident in Ashland early this morning. Two of the five involved in the accident were flown via helicopter to a hospital in Worcester. ... We are unsure as to the extent of the injuries at this time. Out of respect for the students’ families, we are also not releasing names at this point. β€œ

Ashland Police has not released any names or the types of injuries.

According to sources on the scene, those in the vehicle suffered pelvic and head injuries.

The crash is still under investigation. Massachusetts State Police and Ashland are investigating.

Ashland Police had not issued any statements about the cause, as of 3 p.m.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs or speed played a factor in the crash.

Torbert in her Sunday email to staff wrote β€œWe know that tomorrow will be a difficult day for many of our students. I will be meeting with the administrative team early tomorrow morning, and we will then follow up with support and medical staff. We will make sure to have counselors, social workers and support staff available throughout the day. β€œ

East Union Street between Route 135 an Cedar Street was still closed as late as 3 p.m. on Sunday.

As much as 15 percent of Ashland, and a small section of Framingham, was without power for more than 90 minutes early this morning. Crews were still working to remove the poles and wires as of noon.
